For this purpose, a thin layer of air with the base area A and the thickness Δh is considered at an arbitrary altitude h. The air within this layer has a certain mass Δm. There are two equations for computing pressure as a function of height. The first equation is applicable to the standard model of the troposphere in which the temperature is assumed to vary with altitude at a lapse rate of : • = reference pressure • = reference temperature (K)
